WE FOR THEM: speak out against torture

Friday 25 June at 13:00 UTC+2 (Paris time) - online - free of charge

On the occasion of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on  June 26, we are pleased to invite you to our webinar "WE FOR THEM: speak out against torture" organised by our team in Nigeria.
As the international community pays tribute to the hundreds of thousands of victims around the world who are subjected to torture on a daily basis, it is important to reiterate that torture is an unequivocal crime that can never be justified, whether it is to fight terrorism, protect national security or for any other reason.
On this day of remembrance, we also have a duty to recall the legal obligation of States to ensure that victims of torture receive full and effective reparation, as set out in Article 14 of the UN Convention against Torture.

In this webinar, several experts will discuss the societal benefits, outcomes, challenges and best practices of reparation and rehabilitation of torture victims:
  • Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, ASF France Country Representative in Nigeria
  • Prof. Michael O'Connor, Professor of Law, California, USA
  • Markus Ishaku, Officer in Charge of Police Complaints Unit, Police HQ Nigeria
  • Marie Salphati, Representative to the United Nations at the International Federation of ACAT (Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture) - FIACAT
Moderator: Dr. Qasim Akinreti, former President of the National Union of Journalists, Lagos
