Like every year, a coordination meeting of Pro Bono legal aid lawyers from the Nigerian Bar Association took place yesterday in the framework of the SAFE project. Indeed, the SAFE project "Strengthening the national actors' capacities and Advocating For Ending serious human rights violations in Nigeria" is a project implemented by Avocats Sans Frontières France in Nigeria since June 2019, in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association and the Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organization (CAPIO). This project is funded by the European Union and the French Development Agency.
The lawyers present at this activity are lawyers fully involved in the project. First of all, they have received training in order to be able to offer legal assistance to people who are victims of human rights violations by the police (torture, arbitrary detention, extrajudicial executions, etc.). In addition, these lawyers work daily to identify new cases of human rights violations in prisons and police stations in order to bring the most sensitive cases to court. In the first year of the project, 53 cases have already been identified.
The coordination meeting that took place on Wednesday 23 September therefore brought together 14 lawyers from the project to exchange ideas and share experiences. These exchanges allowed for the development of new strategies that lawyers can adopt in order to overcome the challenges they face. The European Union delegation and a lawyer from the ProCAT project also participated in the meeting via video conference to provide input.
