For two days, on 26 and 27 November 2020, the training of actors of the penal chain of Bamenda on the laws protecting persons deprived of their liberty was held in Bafoussam, Cameroon.

This is an action planned within the framework of the RECAJUD project, which aims to strengthen the capacities of the members of the judicial chain on the protection of persons deprived of their liberty, especially the most vulnerable, but also to promote the application of alternative sentences.
This project, implemented by ASF France, Recodh and ASF Cameroon, and financed by the Crisis and Support Centre of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, aims to ensure that the fundamental rights of detainees are respected.
Throughout the project, 4 training sessions for actors in the penal chain were planned. This was the fourth and final training session for these actors, led by experts from RECODH and ASF Cameroon.
What was the objective?
The general objective of the training session was to strengthen the capacities of 20 criminal justice actors in Bamenda on national, regional and international standards for the protection of the rights of persons deprived of liberty.
More specifically, the aim was to
- Share methods and techniques for managing situations of deprivation of liberty,
- Facilitate the exchange and sharing of experiences of the different actors to discuss the implementation of decisions that are more respectful of the rights of these persons deprived of their liberty, and
- To allow the development of recommendations for the improvement of detention conditions.
As usual, the facilitators used a methodology based on dynamic participation, with working groups, case studies and plenary sessions.
A role play was also used to illustrate the mechanisms discussed during the training.
