In commemoration of the World Day against the Death Penalty on 10 October 2021, the theme of which was "Women under sentence of death, an invisible reality", our field team in Nigeria organised various activities related to this topic in order to raise awareness about the death penalty among the Nigerian population. Let's take a look back at the events of the past week!
First of all, a training session for death penalty lawyers took place on 5 and 6 October in Abuja. The aim of the training was to equip participants with specific skills to adequately represent people facing the death penalty in Nigeria.
Then, on 7 October and with the support of the French Embassy in Nigeria, our team organised a screening of a film on the death penalty called "Just Mercy", followed by a discussion session with activists on the death penalty issue. The film was inspired by a real-life story about access to justice for wrongly convicted women, children and the poor trapped in the Nigerian criminal justice system.
Our Country Representative in Nigeria, Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, was invited to participate in this discussion after the screening of the film to share her knowledge on the subject of the death penalty.
