Today, Monday 18 July 2022, is
Nelson Mandela International Day.

On this occasion, Avocats Sans Frontières France publishes a study presenting the analysis and challenges of access to justice and prison issues in Guinea, in the light of the political transition.

During the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in January 2020, 22 recommendations were presented to the Guinean delegation by UN member states on the issues of the fight against torture, the conditions of detention and treatment of detainees, and the fight against impunity, in particular on the judicial treatment of the violence perpetrated on 28 September 2009.

While the transitional authorities officially opened the National Conferences on 22 March 2022 despite the absence of a large number of political parties, which are to be held until 29 April 2022 in Conakry and in all the country's prefectures, the justice system, the "compass" of the political transition, remains a major challenge to be taken up in order to ensure the success of this complex transition, and the expectations of the citizens of Guinea are numerous in this regard.

The applicable legal framework (international, regional and national), the state of play of prisons (infrastructure and human resources), systemic problems to be addressed in the light of international and regional standards in terms of detention: read the study!
