Despite the deteriorating security situation in Haiti, Avocats Sans Frontières France - ASF France is continuing to implement the IMPLIC project, which was initiated in 2020. Funded by the European Union and AFD - Agence Française de Développement, this project aims to promote respect for human rights, in particular by defending and protecting the rights of people deprived of their liberty through the involvement of local stakeholders.
❌ Detention conditions in #Haiti often fail to respect fundamental human rights, marked by food shortages, an unhealthy environment and prison overcrowding resulting from excessive preventive detentions.
📌 On 27 May, around fifteen detainees from the FortLiberté civil prison were released. Charged with minor offences such as cattle theft and attempted theft, they had spent between 6 and 24 months in prison without trial, government commissioner Éno Zéphirin told journalists from Le Nouvelliste.
✅ They will benefit from a programme of rehabilitation and reintegration into society, with opportunities for training in new trades. In addition, psychological follow-up is planned for each of them to optimise their success in this new beginning. By May 2024, our partner IMED had helped 65 prisoners to reintegrate into society as part of the IMPLIC project.
🤝 Thank you to the INSTITUT MOBILE D'ÉDUCATION DÉMOCRATIQUE (IMED), partner in the IMPLIC project, for their involvement and participation in this initiative.
