At a press conference held on 14 April 2025, Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, National Director of Lawyers Without Borders France in Nigeria, spoke out against the continued use of the death penalty in the country, highlighting its legal basis, historical legacy and the major obstacles to its abolition.
She recalled that the majority of people sentenced to death in Nigeria come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have not benefited from a fair trial, highlighting the profound inequalities in access to justice. She also questioned the effectiveness of this punishment as a deterrent, citing data showing that structural reforms and preventive measures are much more effective in combating crime.
In a strong appeal to the Nigerian authorities, Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu urged the government to adopt a proactive approach to judicial reform.
This event was organised with the support of the Australian High Commission in Nigeria.
