On 13 May 2025 in Luxembourg, the European Convention on the Protection of Lawyers was officially opened for signature at the meeting of the Council of Europe's Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
This is the first legally binding international convention dedicated to protecting those who defend our rights.
For two years, ASF France actively contributed to the drafting of this text, which was adopted on 12 March 2025.
It recognises the important role of lawyers in the functioning of justice and the defence of human rights, and guarantees their independence, security and freedom to practise.
The next step is ratification by at least eight States, including six members of the Council of Europe, to enable the Convention to enter into force.
The time to act is now: sign, ratify and provide lasting protection for lawyers, the pillars of the rule of law.
