Sentenced to death for defending himself against his attacker, Sunday Jackson was the victim of a profound injustice. During an altercation in 2015, the knife held by the attacker accidentally fatally wounded him, resulting in Sunday Jackson being sentenced to death.
As part of the ProJUST project, ASF France carried out advocacy work with the Governor of Adamawa State, sending him a letter detailing the injustice of this sentence and appealing for clemency. The Governor's appeal for clemency was joined by that of other Nigerian and international organisations, and was relayed by several media outlets.
Thanks to this collective effort, after 11 years on death row in Nigeria, Sunday Jackson has finally regained his freedom, following the pardon granted by the Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. We salute this courageous act, which embodies justice and respect for human dignity. Beyond the case of Sunday Jackson, this decision carries a strong message of hope in favour of the total abolition of the death penalty in Nigeria.
ASF France remains committed to guaranteeing access to the law for the most vulnerable and to the universal abolition of the death penalty.
