In 2026, Nigeria will mark the 10th anniversary of its moratorium on executions. A decade without executions serves as a reminder of the importance of transforming this de facto moratorium into a permanent abolition enshrined in law.

To mark the World Day Against the Death Penalty, two events were organized in Abuja on October 8 and 9, 2026, with the participation of Lawyers Without Borders France (ASF France) and its partners.

On October 8, at the Swiss Embassy, testimonies from victims, their loved ones, and members of the abolitionist movement gave a voice to those who directly experience the consequences of capital punishment. Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, ASF France’s country representative in Nigeria, also highlighted the organization’s commitment to abolition.

On October 9, in partnership with the Australian Embassy, ASF France organized an event combining artistic expression with testimonies from people who have experienced the death penalty. The day continued with a workshop focused on transforming the moratorium into legal abolition, addressing in particular judicial discretion, situations of vulnerability, and the future of the death penalty in Nigeria.

Through these initiatives, ASF France continues its commitment, alongside its Nigerian partners, to defend fundamental rights and help advance the abolition of the death penalty.
